Automatic Metadata Generation - Use Cases
AMG-UC is a JISC funded project with the objective of identifying use cases and prioritising tools and services.
The study began on 1 March 2009 and was completed on 31 July 2009, currently final reports are being reviewed.
Background
Metadata is important for the discovery and curation of resources. Creating high quality, consistent metadata can be time-consuming and expensive. Therefore automatic metadata generation offers considerable benefits. However, automatic metadata generation is not an end in itself. The benefits are realised only when the metadata is used. AMG-UC will harvest the knowledge from past and current work on automatic metadata generation to develop “use cases” focussing on the benefits gained from automatically generated metadata. These use cases will highlight the tools and services that can have the greatest impact for users and help to prioritise future planning within JISC.
Problem
AMG-UC focussed on metadata generation and metadata use.
On the deposit side there are issues around where useful metadata lies, what tools exist to extract metadata, how these tools should be integrated into the deposit process, and how the many different formats of resources can be handled. But deposit is relatively simple compared with the issues around how metadata is used. Metadata is used in many different contexts: the digital library, e-learning, scholarly communications, e-science, curation and preservation. The extent to which metadata is used is also dependent on search mechanisms many of which use a “lowest common denominator” approach to metadata elements. It is therefore important to develop clear use cases to inform uptake of available automatic metadata tools and inform future tool requirements.
